Apply for or reserve a personalised number plate
Would you like a specific combination of letters or numbers for your number plate, for example
- an initialism,
- your company’s abbreviation,
- a date of birth or wedding date, or
- would you like a ‘vintage number plate’ that has become available again in your district, together with a specific identification number, for your vehicle?
For a fee, you can apply for a personalised number plate or have one reserved in advance.
Would you like to retain the personalised number plate of your deregistered vehiclerin the same administrative district at a later date, you can have the registration number reserved for a maximum of one year and reapply for it when re-registering the vehicle or registering another vehicle. A reservation for a personalised number plate expires if you a deregistered vehicle . Please contact the registration authority in advance.
Please note:
A personalised number plate reserved in a different registration district cannot be transferred to the new registration district when you move house.

At most local vehicle registration authorities, you can reserve or apply for a personalised number plate in person, in writing or by telephone.

If you have reserved a personalised number plate in advance, you will need the reservation confirmation for the registration process.
A personalised number plate is not a special type of number plate. You will find the required documents listed under the relevant services.
Costs
Fees are set in accordance with the Schedule of Fees for Road Traffic Measures (GebOst).
Note: If you opt for an ‘old registration number’ from among several available options within an administrative district, you will only need to pay a personalised number plate fee if you also wish to specify a particular alphanumeric combination.
Please note:
- The additional fee is also charged when reserving or reallocating a registration number that was previously assigned.
- Subsequent changes to a number plate combination allocated to a vehicle are only possible subject to an additional fee.
Miscellaneous
There is no legal entitlement to be allocated a personalised number plate.
